Let's Feed the Streets Together
No One Chooses the Street
Ghana is home to an estimated 90,000 children living and working on the streets, with roughly 60,000 of them in Accra alone. Most people’s instinct is to ask how a child ends up there. The truer question is what else was ever offered to them. The street isn’t a choice, it’s what’s left once every other option has closed, and the children living it are not the cause of their circumstances, they’re living through them.
For 364 days of the year, that reality is largely invisible to the rest of us. On the 365th, it becomes impossible to ignore. Christmas is a day the whole country turns towards family, warmth and belonging, which makes it, for a child sleeping on the street, one of the loneliest days there is.
Let’s Feed the Street Together exists to close that gap, if only for one day, with everything that day can hold. A hot meal. A free health screening. Clean clothes and shoes. But underneath all of it sits something simpler and harder to give: the message that someone sees you, that you matter, and that you have a place within this community, even now, even here.
It isn’t a substitute for the education, safety and stability every one of these children deserves the other 364 days of the year too, and we don’t pretend it is. But on the one day everyone else is reminded what belonging feels like, we make sure they’re reminded of it as well.
What's Happened Since We Started
Real numbers, honestly counted, across eight Christmases and counting
across eight Christmas Days since 2018
we aim to feed, screen and clothe every single 25 December
we’ve shown up for, every year since the project began
One Day Should Open the Door to Every Other Day
A single day of warmth matters. It also isn’t enough on its own, and we know it. The next stage of this project is about building a real bridge from the 25th of December into the rest of the year, so that a family we meet on Christmas Day can be connected into Starlight’s other work, a place in school, a trade for a parent, ongoing support, rather than saying goodbye until next December.
We’re also working to reach beyond the communities we’ve returned to most often, so that Let’s Feed the Street Together grows every year without leaving anyone still waiting for their first one.
What Every Christmas Day Looks Like
Three things, given together, because dignity isn’t just one of them
Help Make Sure She Never Has to Choose
Every pack of pads funded, every volunteer trained and every conversation started with a father or a brother moves a girl closer to a school year with no days missed. If that’s a future worth funding, we’d love to hear from you, as an individual, an organisation or a corporate partner.
