As we celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 with the theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” we’re confronting period poverty’s harsh reality in Ghana. About 65% of schoolgirls miss up to five days monthly due to lack of menstrual products, while 72% in rural areas resort to unsafe alternatives like rags or leaves.
The economic burden is significant—menstrual products consume up to 7% of low-income family budgets. Only 23% of Ghanaian schools offer adequate menstrual facilities, and 68% of girls receive no education about periods before experiencing them.
Embracing the #PeriodFriendlyWorld vision, the Starlight Foundation and Wings of Support are dismantling stigma through sustainable solutions. By partnering with Ghana Health Service professionals, they’re providing not just menstrual products but crucial education and infrastructure that girls deserve. These collaborative efforts advance a world where period poverty becomes history, supporting broader goals for health, education, and gender equality for all.
