#LetHerKnow: MAKING MENSTRUATION A NORMAL FACT OF #LetHerKnow: MAKING MENSTRUATION A NORMAL FACT OF LIFE

As we celebrate this year's World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the importance of normalizing menstruation takes centre stage. The Let Her Know initiative takes great pride in witnessing the remarkable growth of its impact, and on this occasion, we marked this significant day with a session held at Ashiyie Adma Model JHS. Our objective is to educate young girls on menstrual hygiene management, dispelling myths and encouraging open conversations about this natural phenomenon. In collaboration with our dedicated partners @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, we remain resolute in our commitment to normalizing menstruation and fostering informed discussions surrounding periods.

The Let Her Know initiative recognizes the fundamental importance of equipping young girls with knowledge and skills to manage their menstrual hygiene effectively. Our session at Ashiyie Adma Model JHS amongst others was a testament to this commitment. Through engaging activities and informative discussions, we sought to empower these young girls with valuable information, breaking the silence and addressing the misconceptions that often surround menstruation.

Our successes and impact would not be possible without the unwavering support of our partners. Together, we share a collective commitment to promoting menstrual hygiene and normalizing menstruation. Through collaborative efforts, we can reach more communities, expand our initiatives, and amplify our message of awareness and empowerment. Together, we stand against the barriers that hinder progress in menstrual health management.

Let us strive together to create a society where menstruation is no longer taboo, but rather a topic discussed openly, ensuring the well-being and empowerment of girls and women everywhere.

#LetHerKnow: WORLD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY Menstrua #LetHerKnow: WORLD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

Menstruation is an undeniable aspect of women's lives, and the Starlight Foundation, in collaboration with our partners, has been dedicated to raising awareness through our Let Her Know initiative. While the existence of menstruation is widely known, there remains a significant gap in education due to cultural traditions surrounding the topic. At Starlight, we are committed to joining the global movement to create a world where menstruation does not hold anyone back.

Our approach has yielded positive changes, empowering girls to be confident and unashamed of their periods. Additionally, we ensure that they have access to necessary menstrual products.

Unfortunately, for many girls in Ghana, these products are either inaccessible or prohibitively expensive. Consequently, they are left with outdated practices that compromise hygiene and expose them to various health risks. Starlight Foundation, in collaboration with our partners @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, is actively removing this barrier by providing both disposable and reusable sanitary pads.

On this occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, we urge you to contribute to creating a more comfortable period experience for girls. By helping us distribute sanitary pads to those in need, you will make a significant impact in ensuring that no girl is left behind and protect them from potential predators who take advantage of their vulnerability.

Let us come together to empower girls, offer support, and promote menstrual hygiene. Together, we can build a brighter future where menstruation is truly normalized, and girls can thrive without limitations.

#LetHerKnow: Promoting Menstrual Hygiene and Acces #LetHerKnow: Promoting Menstrual Hygiene and Access to Sanitary Products is a Collaborative Effort to Empower Girls

Menstruation presents significant challenges for girls worldwide, including in Ghana, where approximately 95% of girls occasionally miss school due to this natural process (Mahon et al., 2012). The lack of adequate sanitary pads, and facilities, cultural beliefs associating menstruation with uncleanness, discomfort, pain, and the risk of social ridicule contribute to the barriers girls face in attending school. Consequently, girls experience stigma and limited access to menstrual hygiene products, such as sanitary pads and tissue paper, which compounds their challenges.

Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023 aims to rally individuals to translate increased awareness of menstrual health and hygiene into tangible action and investment. The primary goals are to break the silence surrounding menstruation, challenge associated stigmas, and raise awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene for women and girls. By fostering a supportive environment, the objective is to normalize menstruation as a natural part of life by the year 2030.

This year, in collaboration with @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, Starlight Foundation expands its reach to schools and communities. Through this partnership, girls in various educational institutions and communities will gain access to reusable pads designed to last for several years. This collaborative effort stems from a shared vision and commitment to eradicating period poverty and empowering girls to feel confident and secure during their menstruation.

Together, we can eliminate period poverty and foster an environment where girls can embrace their menstruation with dignity and confidence.

#LetHerKnow: MENSTRUATION AS A RESPONSIBILITY, NOT #LetHerKnow: MENSTRUATION AS A RESPONSIBILITY, NOT A BURDEN

Have you ever pondered upon the challenges faced by blind, deaf, and disabled girls during their menstrual period? What about intellectually challenged girls? These are insights we gained from our recent visit to Dzorwulu Special School. Despite their intellectual differences, these girls exhibit remarkable resilience, and with our educational efforts, their quality of life is poised to undergo a positive transformation.

We express our sincere gratitude to the school authorities, as well as @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, for their invaluable support in ensuring access to menstrual hygiene for these girls. Maintaining hygiene is of utmost importance in our daily lives, particularly during menstruation. However, due to a lack of education and the unavailability of appropriate products, our girls have been deprived of these essential hygienic practices. At Starlight Foundation, we are fully dedicated to ensuring that no girl is left behind due to the lack of menstrual products. This is an opportune moment for you to join our cause and reject period poverty and abuse within our communities.

Let us not overlook the fact that a thriving society is one in which girls can live each day in a healthy environment, free from neglect and abuse associated with menstrual hygiene, including intellectually challenged girls.

#LetHerKnow: Addressing Period Poverty and Promoti #LetHerKnow: Addressing Period Poverty and Promoting Menstrual Hygiene Education

It is time to shift our mindset and take concrete actions regarding menstruation. Our extensive visits to various schools have revealed a distressing reality: there are girls who have never encountered a sanitary pad, let alone used one. The Starlight Foundation, in collaboration with @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, is actively working to introduce these girls to the advancements of the 21st century. We believe it is crucial to provide them with the necessary experiences and resources, moving beyond mere discussion and into tangible solutions.

Now is the moment for action. Let us ensure that these girls have access to menstrual products when they need them the most. By imparting comprehensive knowledge about menstrual hygiene, we are teaching our girls not to let anything hinder their progress. We must avoid contradicting ourselves by allowing menstruation to disrupt their normal lives and education. Let us come together to eradicate this impediment from their lives, recognizing that menstruation is an integral part of a girl's journey towards womanhood.

Through education on menstrual hygiene, we aim to empower these girls, equipping them with the proper tools to care for themselves during their periods. Your support is instrumental in making this vision a reality. Together, we can eliminate period poverty.

#LetHerKnow: PERIODS ARE NOT BAD, POOR MENSTRUAL H #LetHerKnow: PERIODS ARE NOT BAD, POOR MENSTRUAL HYGIENE IS

The importance of menstrual hygiene cannot be described in words, menstruation has become a burden to many girls around the world, and they have to bother about menstrual products as well as the consequences of not going through their periods in a hygienic way. In Ghana, for instance, the cost of s sanitary pads is more than food and girls are left with the choice of staying hygienic or well-fed for a long time. For girls on the street, the situation they face in relation to their menstrual health is appalling. These are the category of girls that have less attention in society and matters of their periods are not spoken about entirely.

Our Let Her Know initiative has been one of inclusion, especially with street-connected girls, ensuring that these girls have the same experiences as any other girl. This time, with the support of @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, these girls will not have to deal with their periods in an unhygienic manner. Our visit will also serve as a level of hope for these girls that their issues are not neglected and they, just like other girls can equally go through their periods in a healthy manner.

For our street-connected girls, talks on hygiene have been one of the issues faced within their settlements. Being exposed to this education will help them navigate their daily lives without discomfort or ridicule from the outside world.

#LetHerKnow: PRACTICING MENSTRUAL HYGIENE IS A STE #LetHerKnow: PRACTICING MENSTRUAL HYGIENE IS A STEP TOWARDS A HEALTHY LIFE

It’s all excitement whenever we visit schools in our quest to educate and provide relief for girls during their periods. The conversations that come out of these visits have always ended with the question of what more can be done to support these girls every month. On this particular visit to Accra Rehabilitation Centre, not only were the authorities and girls excited about our education, there were various testimonies on how our reusable and disposable pads will aid these girls for a very long time.

We are therefore grateful to the school authorities for making this possible and a bigger thanksgiving to @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport Wings for their constant support in ensuring that our girls go through their menstrual period safe, happy and of sound mind. Period hygiene is a great concern of many girls in our communities and these gestures not only come as relief, it also dives into the many ways we can support our girl child as individuals.

The cost of menstrual hygiene products is very high and predators have leveraged this to sexually abuse our girls with promises of helping girls purchase sanitary pads. Parents, we encourage you to do more for our girls. Buying one sanitary pad for a girl today will save her from abuse and ensure that they go through this period in the most hygienic way possible.

We are delighted to announce the commencement of p We are delighted to announce the commencement of phase 3 of the Menso Meka Ho Bi project. The Starlight Foundation, in partnership with our esteemed collaborator @adamfoghana, has successfully visited the schools attended by all 14 children under the "Menso Meka Ho Bi" project. During these visits, we have covered their full tuition fees, and extra classes, provided sustenance and supplied them with necessary stationery items in preparation for the upcoming academic term.

The profound impact of this project on the lives of these children and their families has been heartwarming, as evidenced by the kind gestures and messages we have received from school administrators. We take great pleasure in expressing our gratitude and appreciation to all stakeholders and sponsors who have contributed to this significant milestone. Education, not only being a fundamental human right, is also a public good and a collective responsibility.

In conjunction with Adamfo Ghana, we are committed to providing comprehensive support to ensure the holistic development of these children, enabling them to thrive in society. Furthermore, we are empowering their parents with sustainable business skills, thereby fostering long-term community development.

#LetHerKnow: PERIOD DAYS ARE LIKE ANY OTHER DAYS #LetHerKnow: PERIOD DAYS ARE LIKE ANY OTHER DAYS

Every day in the year, there are more than a million girls around the world menstruating however the experiences of each girl vary from one another. Whiles others go about their days like every typical day, there is a set that needs to face neglect and abuse bits on their period. Over the years, the Let Her Know initiative has taught our girls to embrace their periods with care whiles pursuing their day-to-day activities like any other day.

Sadly, this cannot be possible without menstrual products, all our education will be in vain if girls do not have access to menstrual products and a healthy environment to achieve this. With the support of @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport, the girls of Accra Rehabilitation Centre and street-connected at Kingsway will not only be exposed to our education but also have the opportunity to thrive in school and at home with the provision of both disposable and reusable sanitary pads.

The time to normalize menstruation and its associated activities also comes with a cost that cannot be left to burden our girls. With this, we entreat all government agencies and non-profitable agencies to help in our fight for free menstrual products for our girls. Cost burdens will not only be removed, but girls will also have the confidence to move about their duties without the fear of being ridiculed or spotted for a leaked period.

#LetHerKnow: MENSTRUAL HEALTH EDUCATION SAVES OUR #LetHerKnow: MENSTRUAL HEALTH EDUCATION SAVES OUR GIRLS FROM INFECTIONS

Period shame is rooted in most of our traditions. Every day, a girl faces the ordeal of being ridiculed, shamed and prevented from participating in normal life activities due to menstruation. What has caused these reactions to issues of menstruation has been the long-term neglect and unavailability of menstrual hygiene products in the past. Currently, with numerous introduced menstrual hygiene products to the world, girls still face these challenges in their daily lives.

What has been the cause of all these? The lack of integration of immense education has left girls exposed to the old stories being told about their period. Yes, there are products available yet they are not accessible to most girls especially those in rural areas. When accessible, there is the problem of cost making it difficult for girls to purchase these products.

Through the support of @adamfoghana and @wingsofsupport Wings, the girls of Teshie Salem Presby JHS have not only received education on immerging techniques to manage their periods, but they've also received both disposable and reusable pads to aid in their menstrual cycle. This is the time our girls need us the most, the time of ridicule has passed as our teachings have encouraged even the boy child to embrace and assist girls during their periods.

#LetHerKnow: NO MORE LEAKAGE, A SAFE PAD FOR ALL #LetHerKnow: NO MORE LEAKAGE, A SAFE PAD FOR ALL

Lack of sanitary has not only kept many girls out of the classroom, but it has also landed most of them in cases of teenage pregnancy, child abuse and early marriage. The high cost of acquiring just a pad makes most girls fall prey to men. From our experience with our Let Her Know project, there has been increased class attendance by girls who have received both reusable and disposable sanitary pads. This is to say that they do not have to result to other ways to acquire a pad which will cause a negative steer in their education.

To be able to reach their full potential in society, menstrual hygiene can be considered to be one factor. Most girls dread their periods not only because of the pain but the embarrassment of having to go 3 or more days without anything to keep their blood flow away. The girl child is stacked in one place, unable to interact in fear of the disgrace of an apparent blood flow.

If the girl child's education is as important as we claim then it's equally important to have measures in place that do not keep them away from school. One of these things is what Starlight Foundation is doing in these schools and communities and now the turn of the pupil of Teshie Salem Presby JHS School. It’s possible to end period poverty and save our girls from reckless men who take advantage of them due to their circumstances.

Next year by this time, let's meet again with many heroic messages on how menstrual hygiene has improved in our schools and communities and how our girls' mindset has been directed to focus on what the future holds for them. Remember you participating in this or not will not stop a girl period. This makes it compulsory for us to guard our girls against the public shame of not having sanitary pads and unfortunate incidents such as early pregnancies.

#LetHerKnow: DON'T GET SPOTTED, GET A PAD TODAY F #LetHerKnow: DON'T GET SPOTTED, GET A PAD TODAY

For 28 days in a month, the menstrual cycle of a girl makes them either discomforted or in some form of pain. Of all these times the most noticeable and crucial one is her period. She needs a lot of products to be able to safely pass this stage in preparation for the next one. Old and traditional ways of containing periods have proved unsafe and inappropriate for any girl. In modern times, it's with this same knowledge that reusable pads have been created. However this time, they are safe, do not leak and can last for longer periods with proper care.

The pupils of Kpong Quarters RC Basic School have been made to understand that nothing can stand in their way and this is possible with the support of the reusable and disposable pads given to them. The school authorities have also addressed the need to expand amenities that cover menstrual hygiene products and we are grateful that our visit has provided them insights on how to safely manage these girls in school when on their periods.

The school grounds pose as an escape route for many children in remote areas. Thus, a girl must be confident to walk to class without a sanitary pad and be assured of one without struggle. It makes school exciting and it brings more girls closer to achieving greater things without restraint. A pad for a girl child in every school is a must and while this can pose a challenge, we can collectively achieve this in our own small ways. Just like how toiletries are a necessity in every school, so is a sanitary pad for every girl child in school.

The #LetHerKnow initiative is funded by @wingsofsupport in ensuring that all girls reach their full potential.

#InternationalDayforStreetChildren: UNTIL EVERY CH #InternationalDayforStreetChildren: UNTIL EVERY CHILD IS SAFE, NO CHILD IS SAFE

During this period of talks on how to address issues pertaining to street-connected children, we who have been involved with them on a constant basis know that it’s not enough until every child is removed from the street and placed in a safer environment together with their families.

This time, we have normalized the existence of street-connected children, what makes it more appalling is how the parents of these children exploit them and use them as bait of sympathy. They beg for alms, steal from people and engage in hard labour whiles their parents watch on. It was therefore not a surprise to us at Starlight Foundation when this year's celebration of International Day for Street Children concentrated on the safety of street-connected children.

In our recent talks with street-connected children and their parents, they were assured of a better life for their families as the street is unsafe for growing children. These people have been in situations where they have been abused, exploited and lied to by community people who have promised them a good life and now find it difficult to trust anyone to give them a safe place.

We, therefore, appeal to authorities and the law to address issues relating to street-connected children in a swift and fair manner. These children can be kept in foster homes where they receive adequate care whiles others can be united with their families in remote areas.

All this can be possible if we are all actively involved in the "see something, say something" agenda. It’s not too late to save our children from the plights on the streets. The time is now.

#InternationalDayforStreetChildren: GIVE STREET CH #InternationalDayforStreetChildren: GIVE STREET CHILDREN A SAFE SPACE TO SLEEP AND ACCESS TO EDUCATION

Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has been one of the incredible ways of handling humans in all aspects of life. In the case of children, it is very crucial in the sense that to attain self-actualization, other needs cannot be neglected as they form the pillar of what the child would be in the future. There are therefore physiological needs which take care of food, water and clothing. Safety needs which addresses shelter and safety, belonging needs which addresses relationships and self-esteem which addresses accomplishment.

At any point in time that a child feels that any of the needs have not or cannot be provided, it threatens their safe space and what they hold in high esteem. We've all seen that in the case of street-connected children, a safe place to thrive is one big challenge. On the street, they are exposed to a lot of hazards which can eventually lead to death. Through Teach Them Young, YENHOHIA and Menso Meka Ho Hi, Starlight Foundation with the support of @adamfoghana has given hope to school children, street-connected children and their families by providing them with a safe environment to learn and thrive in life. This same message is what we took to the community members of Amrahia especially parents and children of the Church of Pentecost, Real Mission Assembly.

Let's join hands today by providing the basic needs of all children across the nation, these little ones are what will depict the better future we hope for ourselves.

This achievement underscores the notion that every child can achieve their full potential with the right support and investment, and that "Education Cannot Wait."

The Menso Meka Ho Bi project is fully financed by @adamfoghana as part of their initiative to curb streetism and safeguard every child. Fourteen (14) children are enrolled in the scholarship scheme, and their parents continue to benefit from our incoming generation skills training.

Our program, which encompasses family support and community development, is empowering and contributes to ending streetism in Teshie, Accra, and throughout Ghana. We are delighted to work with Adamfo Ghana to promote education, empowerment, and community development.

#InternationalDayforStreetChildren: Together, we w #InternationalDayforStreetChildren: Together, we will intentionally groom safety-conscious children for our society

As a society, we have a collective responsibility to ensure that our children are safe and protected from harm. Children are vulnerable and often lack the knowledge and experience to keep themselves safe. It is therefore up to us as parents, caregivers, educators, and community members to intentionally groom safety-conscious children who can navigate the world around them with confidence and security.

So, what does it mean to groom safety-conscious children? It means taking deliberate and intentional steps to teach children about safety, risk management, the effectiveness of streetism and healthy boundaries. It means creating a culture of safety where children feel comfortable speaking up if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable. And it means equipping children with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe in different situations rather than seeking advice from their peers.

As part of the International Day for Street Children, Starlight Foundation and @adamfoghana are reminding everyone that, a child’s safe place is home with family and not otherwise. We have therefore stressed the need to strengthen family bonds at all levels of their lives. Also, school-going children are been empowered to stay in school and off the street whilst community leaders and individuals in society are been reminded of their role in the eradication of streetism and the right way to protect children.

Grooming safety-conscious children requires intentional effort on the part of parents, caregivers, educators, and community members. By teaching children about the effecting of streetism, body safety, encouraging open communication, role-playing different scenarios, teaching online safety, setting boundaries, fostering independence, and advocating for child safety, we can create a safer and more secure society for all our children.

#InternationalDayforStreetChildren: Empowering Chi #InternationalDayforStreetChildren: Empowering Children to Speak Up and Adults to Report Abuse

As parents, caregivers, educators, and community members, ensuring the safety and well-being of children is our collective responsibility. Unfortunately, child abuse and neglect continue to be a pervasive and alarming problem in many parts of the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 1 billion children worldwide have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence or neglect in the past year. This is unacceptable, and we must do everything in our power to prevent and respond to child abuse.

One crucial way to protect children from abuse is to empower them to speak up and report any abusive behaviour they experience or witness. However, this is often easier said than done, as many children may not feel comfortable or safe disclosing abuse to others.

As part of this year's #InternationalDayforStreetChildren celebration, Starlight Foundation and @adamfoghana is making a conscious effort through our #TeachThemYoung to educate school children and those on the street to be sitting about their environment and not to seek to the street whilst advising the school authorities on some of the possible ways on how to engage children on speaking up about abuse.

It's not just the responsibility of children to speak up about abuse; adults also have a crucial role to play in protecting children from harm. All adults, whether parents, teachers, caregivers, or community members, should be aware of the signs of abuse and know how to report it if they suspect abuse is occurring.

We have provided a list of some of the few offices to report cases of child abuse.

#InternationalDayforStreetChildren: Equal Opportun #InternationalDayforStreetChildren: Equal Opportunities For All Children

The International Day for Street Children is observed annually on April 12th to raise awareness about the challenges faced by millions of children around the world who are forced to live and work on the streets. One of the most pressing issues that these children face is safety. Ensuring the safety of children who live on the streets is not only a moral imperative but also a legal obligation that governments and communities must fulfil.

The safety of children is a multifaceted issue that requires a comprehensive approach. It involves protecting children from physical harm, safeguarding their mental and emotional well-being, and empowering those in school not to join the streets. For street children, safety concerns are particularly acute due to their vulnerability to exploitation, abuse, and violence. They risk being subjected to sexual exploitation, forced labour, trafficking, and drug abuse. Street children also face discrimination and stigmatization, which further exacerbates their vulnerability.

Ensuring the safety of all children requires a comprehensive approach that addresses their basic needs, education, legal protection, community support, and mental health. Governments and communities must work together to create a safe and supportive environment for all children to help them overcome the challenges they face and lead fulfilling lives. On this International Day for Street Children, let us remember the millions of children who are living on the streets and renew our commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being.

#InternationalDayforStreetChildren: WHERE IS HOME #InternationalDayforStreetChildren: WHERE IS HOME IF MY HOME IS FULL OF ABUSE

After many years of conducting Teach Them Young in several schools and communities in Ghana, one concern that has been raised by several children has been the relationship they find themselves in at home. Abuse does not only come from rape, most adults still have the trauma of their childhood imprinted in their memory.

The best place of safety is obviously not on the street, yet every day a lot of children find themselves there one way or the other. Parents, it’s not enough to give birth and put children in school. Neither do economic crises define our relationship with our children. Parents do not have time for their children all in the name of searching for money.

The pupil and school authorities of Okuapemman JHS in Akropong have been taught how to identify and handle children who feel unsafe in their homes and have generated signs of escaping their homes for the street. With the help of Adamfo Ghana, these pupils and their authorities ate informed on how to safely avoid abusive relationships and stay focused in school.

Reports abusive homes now, save a child from constant trauma and help our societies flourish with children who have healthy mindsets ready to take up the world.
