When we watch what’s happening on our streets, it feels like our leaders have a tall list of sympathy letters to release every time things go wrong. It is very fast and you begin to wonder if only they take their responsibility as seriously as that. Well, sympathy has not reduced the number of street children neither has it improved their lives.
In this new wave, the citizens are willing to crash with authorities, some putting their lives on the line just to get their issues across. Our main issue is our street children and their stand in all these. Especially the little ones, this is the time they grow mentally through the things they see around and the current situation is not the orientation we seek for them. It will get to a point all these things we’re saying would be meaningless because their minds have been already made up.
Let’s stop the sympathy appeal as if that’s all we’ve got. The reason why there are so many ministries is so that everyone can concentrate on their expertise. We place you there not to come and close doors in our face but to represent our course in higher places. That is what the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Service needs to do. Not to wait when a street child is killed, not to wait when a child is raped, not to wait when the street is bloody before it seems we’ve now found our voice.
All that we’re portraying is unconcern because if any of our children have gone wandering on the street for just a day, we have pulled every string to get them a safe home. The street children are ours to take care of, just as every government wants to make a good name for all development, why don’t we take this name of being able to transform the lives of our street children. All of it comes to benefit no one but us.
