Today, 12th April, we mark the International Day for Street Children, and this year’s theme could not speak louder: “Protect, Not Punish.”
Every child deserves justice. Every child deserves dignity. Yet for so many street-connected children across our communities, those words remain out of reach. Today, the Starlight Foundation refused to let that be the end of the story.
We did not wait for children to fall through the cracks. We went to them.
We visited schools in high-risk communities, sitting with young people and reminding them that their futures are worth fighting for. We took our voices to television and radio, speaking plainly about children’s rights, about a justice system that must protect and not punish, and about what everyone of us can do to make that a reality.
But perhaps the most powerful thing we did today was listen.
We walked into markets and streets, into the heart of communities, and we sat with the people who are living this reality every single day. Market women, workers, street-connected families, and community leaders shared their stories, their frustrations, and their hopes. Because the truth that our years of work have taught us is this: you cannot build meaningful solutions without the very people those solutions are meant to serve. Not at any stage.
Behind every face we met was a story, a dream, and a need for inclusion, not exclusion. There were smiles exchanged, real conversations had, and seeds of hope planted in places where hopelessness had taken root.
This is not charity. This is solidarity.
We want to say a very special and heartfelt thank you to Adamfo Ghana for fully supporting and funding our IDSC 2026 activities. Your belief in this work made every school visit, every broadcast, and every grassroots conversation possible.
To everyone reading this today, the movement is growing, and there is room for you in it. Get involved. Share this message. Speak up for those who are too often spoken over. Be the hope that a vulnerable child in your community is waiting for.
Protect, not punish. Always.
